DIGITAL DUALISM

Social media have led to what is termed identity crisis as it builds a dualism. Due to influence and the love of clout, people have tended to ignore their own identity, performing a picture-perfect image for the world. This dualism raises a lot of questions concerning the nature of identity, self-presentation, and authenticity.

The issue of authenticity online is one that remains mythical as people paints a picture that the world wants to see rather than how they want to be seen. Our online selves are always shaped by the platforms we spend time on and also the public. Online platforms have made people forget their principles and values just to please the public eye. But question is if the public wants what is not morally right can we justify it? If the trend is to be naked on the public platform, is it morally justifiable? Is it ethically right to change your principles and values just to gain more followers and comments?

Performative self is an inherent aspect of online identity. We tend to create an image that serves the world’s interest rather than our own. Though sometimes for content creation people have to be creative and all, it does not necessarily mean that they should be deceptive and prone to unethical trend influence. The performative nature of online identity can lead to disconnection and inauthenticity. When we are aware that our online selves’ performances, we may wonder which self is the “real” one. This tension between authenticity and performance can be a source of anxiety and self-doubt.

The tension between authenticity and performance is fundamental aspect of online identity. We are caught between the desire to present an authentic self and the need to perform a self that is acceptable to others. The digital dualism is not unique to online identity. It is a reflection of the broader human experience, where we are always negotiating between our internal experiences and external presentations.

So, how can we navigate this digital dualism and cultivate a health online identity? It is essential for people to think before posting on social media: this helps them to analyse on whether their post will maintain their respect or tarnish it. It is important for one to prioritize authenticity over fame: this helps maintain a healthy digital balance where you are not stripped and ridiculed. Be aware of the performative nature of online identity and the ways in which we curate our online selves.

The issue of digital dualism is one that needs to be addressed with a critical analysis. Individuals should be able to separate their online and offline lives in a way that is authentic and healthy. Online fasting and thinking before posting are the two fundamentals to maintain a healthy online presence. Online performance should not detour one from their moral principles or values, but one should always think be able to ignore online pressure and live an authentic life.
